Definition:

Bleeding gums and gum diseases refer to oral conditions where the gum tissues become inflamed, infected, or start to recede, leading to discomfort, bad breath, and potential tooth loss. The most common forms of gum disease include gingivitis (mild gum inflammation) and periodontitis (advanced gum infection that can damage the bone and tissues supporting the teeth).

Causes:

  • Plaque and Tartar Buildup – Bacteria in plaque release toxins that irritate the gums.

  • Diabetes – High blood sugar can increase gum infections.
  • Hormonal Changes – Pregnancy, menopause, or puberty can make gums more sensitive.
  • Medications – Some medications cause dry mouth, reducing saliva that helps clean bacteria.

  • Swollen, red, or tender gums
  • Bleeding gums while brushing or flossing
  • Persistent bad breath (halitosis)
  • Receding gums
  • Formation of deep pockets between gums and teeth
  • Loose or shifting teeth

Treatment:
